Julie and Julia step aside. There are two new chefs in town.

Carleton Journalism Student Hilary Duff decided that she was going to learn how to cook this summer. So she created her own blog Hilary Makes. Using recipes from Canadian Living as her guide, she explored such delights as apple torte, chocolate volcano cake and chickpea tabbouleh salad. “My roommate thinks it’s really great now that I have actually learned how to cook.,” she says. Duff is anticipating the return of five other roommates and hoping that they too will be pleasantly surprised with her cooking prowess. She said they didn’t have high expectations before but were frustrated that, on a regular basis, she served plain chicken with bottled BBQ sauce and plain rice with no veggies. Hilary has also become obsessed with food photography as you will see from her blog at www.Hilarymakes.com.

Gord Lamb has dedicated his blog The Savoury Starving Student to students who would rather spend their hard earned money on anything but food. Each post includes simple step-by-step instructions on how to prepare dishes ranging from tasty cheddar zucchini patties to a gourmet version of kraft dinner and he includes some not so memorable moments such as his big beet failure. Gord also makes an effort to include gluten-free recipes. Gord, who is also pursuing a journalism degree at Carleton, has had some first-hand experience working with a local farmer and is interested in working with local produce. He neatly incorporates some of these experiences into his blog at www.savourystudent.com
